Department of Education Will Restart Collections On Student Loan Debt

On Monday, Department of Education said, it will start collecting Deduction from Student loan from 5 May. It warned that the borrowers will be given income based repayment plans.

In the midst of Corona Virus, March 2020, Federal government Haulted repayment plan on student loan, borrowes were not to make repayments whose loans were in forbearance.

However, President Biden repeatedly sought to provide the relief to borrowers, who had defaulted on their Student loan, under the program named “save”, This plan was designed to provide $20000 relief to the defaulters based on their income and house. However this move was struck down by the supreme court in August.

Besides that, the Trump administration has made it clear that no such relief would be provided to the defaulters of the student loan:

“There will not be any mass loan forgiveness,” said the Department of Education in its latest announcement.

According to the Department, With 42 million people holding 1.6 trillion dollar value of student loan are present in the country. However, out of 42 million 5 million people failed to repay student loan debt in the previous year alone.

Within a next two weeks, borrowers who defaulted on their loan, will start receiving emails about their status along with the reference of their federal debt collectors. By the next few months, automatic deductions will take place from the borrowers paychecks, according to the department.
